Dark Light

Homes and apartments seem to be getting smaller and more compact by the minute, which means you don’t end up with a huge amount of square footage to work with. But living in a small space can be really great if you decorate well and take the time to create a home that is as functional as possible. Keep reading for 4 tips for decorating small spaces:

  1. Bring Light: When you’re working with a small room or area of the home, the number one concern should be light. First, let in as much natural light as possible, decorate with a light color palette, and lastly, make sure to bring in lamps or accent lighting to make the room feel larger. These simple changes can make a huge impact on a small space.
  2. Add Mirrors: It’s no secret that mirrors can make a small space look larger simply by providing a reflection. But if you position your mirror in the right areas you can make an even larger impact. If your room has a window try and work in a mirror directly across from it so it can reflect natural light throughout the room. If you don’t have a window to work with, simply hang your mirror behind a light source for a similar effect.
  3. Allow For Space: Due to the fact that you’re working with a small space, it can be tempting to fill it full of furniture to create a cozy effect. However, for the room to feel larger you need fewer pieces and you need to leave a bit of space when items are against a wall. This will help the room appear larger and more open.
  4. Clear The Floor: Last but not least, when you are decorating a small space, do your best to keep the floor clear. While it’s tempting to add extra pieces for storage, consider floating shelves or tables to keep the floor space open.
