Q&A: What Maintenance Will My Gas Fireplace Need?

The care and maintenance of your gas fireplace is very important. You always want to ensure your fireplace is in good working condition, so you can flip on the heat on whenever it’s needed.

So, the big question is how much maintenance does your Valor Gas Fireplace really need? Once a month? Once a year? And what’s the best way to ensure your fireplace runs smoothly every time? These are some of the questions we get to answer below:

Q: How important is reading through my provided fireplace manual?

Your Valor gas fireplace manual includes instructions on routine maintenance such as glass cleaning and replacement of batteries in your remote receiver and handset.

When performing routine maintenance, please keep in mind that fireplace surfaces, in particular the glass viewing window, are extremely hot during operation and will remain hot for a period of time after the fireplace is turned off.

Q: Do I need to contact my local authorized dealer for maintenance?

Your Valor fireplace should be cleaned and serviced on an annual basis to keep them operating at peak performance. Schedule a regular maintenance check to ensure safe and efficient use as well as maximizing the service life of the fireplace.

Q: Can I clean the glass window myself?

Yes! Refer to your manual to learn how to securely replace the window and the barrier screen before lighting. Ensure that you do not use Windex or ammonia-based cleaners to clean the window.

If you notice a white film on the glass, clean it as soon as you notice the buildup. If the film is left for a longer period of time, it will etch into the glass. Ensure you use a soft damp cloth to apply any cleaners. Dry the glass with a soft, dry, preferably cotton cloth. Most paper towels and synthetic materials are abrasive to ceramic glass and should be avoided. Contact your local authorized dealer for cleaning solutions.

Q: What other maintenance tips should I be aware of?

Here’s a collection of other tips and tricks to ensure your fireplace performs at an optimal level:

  • Fireplace barrier screens are easy to clean, simply use a soft brush to get rid of dust and grime.
  • Batteries in your receiver and remote control should be replaced at least once a year for optimal performance. If your Valor has a battery box extension, do not install 4 additional batteries in the receiver, as this could damage the controls.
  • Matte cast iron parts can be brushed clean. The enamelled cast iron parts can be cleaned with mild soap and water then dried with a lint-free soft cloth.
  • Clean steel surrounds and trims with mild soap and warm water on cooled surfaces only. Any alcohol/solvent base cleaner will weaken the coating and damage it.
  • Dust can be brushed from the ceramic logs/rocks and firebox walls after removing the front unit and opening the window. When cleaning, make sure that no particles are brushed into the slots of the burner.

These critical questions will help you upkeep your Valor Gas Fireplace and will extend the lifespan of your unit by providing proper care. To make maintenance easier, consider adding reminders to your calendar to keep up on which tasks need to be done monthly and those that need to be handled yearly.
